East Texas Burger Co. is one of those small town, hole-in-the-wall kind of joints that you absolutely should stop at if you are hungry. As Taste of American Blogspot reports, "I'm not sure what they put in the burgers, but they have a unique flavor... savory yet different. Very impressive and definitely worth stopping for... Let's call ETBC a successful culinary journey -- good homemade food and nothing from Sam's Club on the menu!"

ETBC is Mineola's oldest eatin' place. Even Bonnie & Clyde, Dan Rather (CBS), and Sissy Spacek have wandered through the doors. Everything at East Texas Burger Co. is nostalgic. Eclectic. Cozy and friendly. The sweet potato fries are almost as good as the peanut butter, coconut, and chocolate cream pies. Be forewarned though: the homemade apricot fried pies go fast, so get there early or call ahead to reserve yours.

ETBC is usually packed; you'll wonder if you can get a table. The answer is yes. ETBC's sister restaurant, La Waffalata is located next door. The brick wall has been opened between both dining rooms to accommodate you. They even have a private party room for church groups, antique car show guests, and bikers.

You can order from either ETBC or La Waffalata -- they are both 1st Place People's Choice Winners. "ETBC's chicken fried steaks are breaded to order -- so is the catfish. La Waffalata's Reubens are voted "Best Reuben" year after year. Their 'roast beef sandwiches on homemade jalapeno cheese bread' are terrific. Here's a hint: Try the apricot bread pudding with amaretto sauce. You will be glad you did.

Owner Ken Davis is on-site. He loves to talk about baseball and Mineola history. His wife Debbie hosts a fun food show on CBS channel 19. She likes to talk about everything -- especially family and how motherhood should be fun. She is an energetic local celebrity with a contagious laugh. If you ask Debbie to pick three words that sum up La Waffalata she'd say, "Fun, Fun, Fun!" catch Debbie on her new website www.dishingwithdebbie.com. Look for inspirational luncheons coming soon in 2008.
